A shape-based buffering method

چکیده
Distance constraint is a major concern in many spatial analyses. Buffering is one of the proximity techniques in GIS most commonly used to address this constraint. I introduce shape-based point buffering, an anisotropic and variable-distance buffer generation method conformal to the original polygons. In contrast with isotropic fixed-distance buffering, shape-based buffering is defined using a relative distance (percentage) instead of a real unit (for example, meters), and it allows all buffered boundaries to be formed at the same time. The construction and implementation of the buffering method are described below. Three emergency-response scenarios are designed to demonstrate potential applications of this buffering method, including a shape-based fixedpercentage buffer calculation and space distribution, a shape-based variable-percentage buffer region, and a reverse calculation of the task schedule from a probability surface constructed from shape-based buffers. Limitations of the method are discussed. The method has potential applications in emergency preparedness and planning to better address fairness issues when a geographic area must be zoned arbitrarily. doi:10.1068/b33046

A Single Basis for Developmental Buffering of Drosophila Wing Shape
The nature of developmental buffering processes has been debated extensively, based on both theoretical reasoning and empirical studies. In particular, controversy has focused on the question of whether distinct processes are responsible for canalization, the buffering against environmental or genetic variation, and for developmental stability, the buffering against random variation intrinsic i...

We present a 3D object retrieval system in which a surfel-based model serves as a query and similar objects are retrieved from a collection of surfel-based models. The system comprises a surfelization technique for converting polygonal mesh models into a corresponding surfel-based representation, pose normalization of surfel-based models, a depth buffer-based method for describing shape of surf...
متن کاملPhenotypic Buffering in a Monogenean: Canalization and Developmental Stability in Shape and Size of the Haptoral Anchors of Ligophorus cephali (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae)
Phenotypic variation results from the balance between sources of variation and counteracting regulatory mechanisms. Canalization and developmental stability are two such mechanisms, acting at two different levels of regulation. The issue of whether or not they act concurrently as a common developmental buffering capacity has been subject to debate. We used geometric morphometrics to quantify th...
متن کاملHigh-performance chromatofocusing using linear and concave pH gradients formed with simple buffer mixtures. I. Effect of buffer composition on the gradient shape.
Numerical calculations together with simplified analytical relations based on local equilibrium theory are used to determine the factors which govern the shape of the gradient formed during chromatofocusing when simple mixtures of buffering species are employed to produce linear or concave pH gradients. The numerical and analytical development is also used to determine the relation between the ...
متن کاملTWO-STAGE METHOD FOR DAMAGE LOCALIZATION AND QUANTIFICATION IN HIGH-RISE SHEAR FRAMES BASED ON THE FIRST MODE SHAPE SLOPE
In this paper, a two-stage method for damage detection and estimation in tall shear frames is presented. This method is based on the first mode shape of a shear frame. We demonstrate that the first mode shape slope is very sensitive to the story stiffness. Thus, at the first stage, by using the grey system theory on the first mode shape slope, damage locations are identified in shear frames. Da...
